Coconut oil is one of the natural products which is in favor of many people, especially women recently. It is well-known as the ideal oil for hair growth, but don’t just stop there, it also has amazing uses for skin due to its unique abilities.
Capability of preventing bacteria
This ability comes from average – chain acids in coconut oil. They are lauric (48-53%), capric (7%), caprylic (8%) and caproic acid (0.5%). These acids are antibacterial and antifungal, so it is excellent to use this oil directly for the skin and hair. If you know how to use coconut oil reasonably, it also can help you prevent acne, treat eczema, rash, and psoriasis and so on.
Capability of preventing oxidation
It is free radicals that cause aging and diseases including cancer. They are molecules which are deficient in electrons, so they will destroy the intact molecules to “hijack” the electrons, which damages the tissues and cells.
We cannot stop the production of free radicals because they are produced in the process of metabolism such as breathing, eating and drinking, smoking…. Hence, the only thing we can do here is cutting them down as much as possible. But how?? How can we do that? Simply, by supplementing our body with antioxidants. Yet again, you are in doubt: where to find antioxidants, right? Luckily, the answer for you here: in coconut oil, one of the best sources of antioxidants.
Coconut oil contains three antioxidants:
- Vitamin E: there are two groups of vitamin E. They are tocopherol and tocotrienol. Tocotrienol is an antioxidant which is 50 times as potent as tocopherol. Coconut oil is one of a few of oils that contain tocotrienol.
Thanks to these substances, coconut oil has a high ability to wipe free radicals out of our body.
What are uses of coconut oil for skin?
Work as a natural moisturizer
Perhaps many women, especially those who have oily skin, are very upset with sebum and wish their skin never secreted this such annoying substance. However, sebum is necessary, not only to moisturize but more importantly also help create a protective layer on the skin which can prevent bacteria’s penetration. Over 50% of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) in coconut oil are very similar to the skin’s sebum. Thus, coconut oil can enhance skin’s ability to prevent bacteria, and keep moisture. It is useful for those who have dry skin or areas of skin which are easy to be dry or cracked like lips, corner of the mouth, heels, elbows.
Owing to the ability to destroy free radicals, coconut oil helps prevent aging, wrinkles, crow’s feet, bruises very well and remove dead cells.
Because MCFAs in coconut oil are very similar to sebum secreted by the skin, coconut oil could penetrate very quickly into the skin, help moisturize and make the skin softer. Besides, the distinct aroma of coconut oil makes you feel like you are applying a natural perfume which could stimulate smell and make you attractive as “a piece of candy”.
